Things You Need To Know About Iguanas
Iguanas, which are from the reptile family known as Iguanidae, have short and powerful legs with sharp claws and strong tails. These lizards use their claws for digging and climbing. Their tails are used as a defense mechanism and for balance. They may appear to be clumsy at times but iguanas are actually good swimmers and great tree climbers. Because of their love for climbing branches are an essential part of their habitat in captivity.
The dewlap, a flap of skin that is primarily noticeable in the throat area of male iguanas, is used to either intimidate a potential predator or to impress a female iguana. Also, the dewlap, provides body temperature regulation. Iguanas also have a crest of soft spines along the middle part of their backs and necks. Typically male iguanas have longer spines as compared to female iguanas.
Male iguanas are usually bigger than females. They have bigger heads as well as brighter body colors when compared to females. The coloration of the male iguana is much distinct during the time of the breeding season. The skin of the iguana has very small scales. When they're exposed to light, some parts of their skin becomes darker in color. Young iguanas have a pale green skin with a black ringed tail. As they mature, their colors become a more earthy brownish color.
Iguanas can be great pets as long as you know how to take care of them. It's true, they are a high maintenance pet. But if you learn to care for your iguana properly then you'll enjoy having one as a pet.
